Kokopelli is one of the most intriguing and widely found images found in southwestern rock art...The humpbacked flute player...a mythic figure most often known as Kokopelli. He is easily identified among other images. He is a universally appealing character...mainly because of his unique traits. . .Kokopelli's trademarks are his flute, humped back and prominent phallus. These characteristics have garnered him the reputation as a fertility symbol, minstrel or possibly a trader, hunting magician, trickster, rain priest and even a seducer of maidens...he is a deity that has survived from Anasazi times to the present. There are many stories related to the legend of Kokopelli because of the interpretations of who he was. . .and the various geographic locations in the Southwest and its Native American inhabitants each give him credit for one or more of these aforementioned 'traits'...the hump on his back often being interpreted as a burden basket...some explanations tell that it was filled with corn seeds, babies and/or blankets. But, the universal appeal is that he is. . ."The Bringer of Joy!"
